A gem of Normand-style architecture, situated in the heart of the conservation area, the Bayeux Cathedral was consecrated on July 14th 1077 by Bishop Odo of Conteville, in the presence of his illustrious brother, William the Conqueror, Duke of Normandy and King of England. It is believed that Odo commissioned the Bayeux Tapestry. The masterpiece from the Middle Ages was probably intended to be hung in the cathedral nave.

Around the cathedral, the historic center was luckily untouched during the events of 1944. You’ll take in the rich heritage with timber-framed houses, manors and townhouses.

Your first stop will be the American Cemetery at Colleville-Sur-Mer, located on the top of the cliff overlooking the famous Omaha Beach. The cemetery is one of the largest American World War II cemeteries constructed on foreign soil. Next is Omaha Beach, which is sadly known for being the most devastating but glorious moment of the Normandy invasion, marking the beginning of the end of World War II. You will also get to see the Pointe du Hoc, an ominous piece of land jutting into the English Channel. It provided an elevated vantage point from which large German guns with a range of 15 miles (25 kilometers) could deliver fire upon both Omaha Beach and Utah Beach. The neutralization of these guns by the allied forces was the key to victory.

Visit Sainte-Mère-Église, one of the first French villages to be liberated. It is famous for a paratrooper who remained attached to the bell tower of the church. Close to the church stands the Airborne Museum. There, you will learn more about the role the paratroopers played in Operation Overlord. The final stop will be Utah Beach, the westernmost beach in the combat zone, where 23,200 American soldiers landed on D-Day.

Afternoon at Leisure to Visit the Bayeux Tapestry Museum

The Bayeux Tapestry tells the epic story, in wool thread embroidered on linen cloth, of William, Duke of Normandy who became King of England in 1066 after the Battle of Hastings. The visit to the museum is organized in three sections, providing an understanding of the work and its context.

The Bayeux Tapestry is presented in a darkened space in which only the artifact itself is lit. After looking at the Tapestry itself, the visit continues with a permanent exhibition, which presents the secrets of its creation, and an overview of the historical context and the Anglo-Norman kingdom in the 11th century. Finally, on the second floor, a 16-minute film screened alternately in French and English, shows how the story told by the Bayeux Tapestry unfolds, including reconstructions of real scenes from the Battle of Hastings.
